PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer is about to make a decision with a big impact on the state's court system - and indirectly the lives of many Arizonans.
The July 1 retirement of Ruth V. McGregor from the Arizona Supreme Court created a vacancy that Brewer will fill within weeks.
She'll be choosing from among three sitting judges recommended by a state nominating commission from among 17 applicants.
1 of the three - Court of Appeals Judges Diane M. Johnsen of Scottsdale, A. John Pelander III of Tucson and Ann A. Scott Timmer of Phoenix - will join the court's current four sitting justices.
Cases heard by the court range from death penalty appeals and discipline of misbehaving attorneys to complex business disputes and constitutional battles between the other two branches of state government.
