McCain addresses seniors at health care town hall

Associated Press - August 25, 2009 2:34 PM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - Sen. John McCain is speaking to seniors about health care reform at a town-hall meeting Tuesday in the retirement community of Sun City.

Hundreds of seniors packed the Grace Bible Church, with dozens of angry would-be attendants being turned away at the front door and dozens others watching the town hall in an overflow room.

The Arizona Republican criticized President Barack Obama's plan to create a government-run health care option to compete with private insurers and says he's "very concerned" about it.

Obama and most Democrats say the choice of a public plan would serve to balance the power of private insurers. But insurance companies see it as a step toward a government takeover, and many business groups agree.
