PHOENIX (AP) - El Mirage officials are outlining the city's course of action regarding the future of Luke Air Force Base.
Luke is a candidate to become the secondary training base for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
The new jet is considered vital to the future of the base as the Air Force phases out its F-16s.
El Mirage officials have expressed concern over noise and pollution from the F-35.
In safeguarding Luke against encroachment, Mayor Michelle Kern said El Mirage has sacrificed and received few economic benefits in return.
Kern said there are a number of avenues for the city to find financial relief including land swaps, a state policy that would encourage companies with high-paying jobs to locate near military installations, and revenue-sharing with its neighbors.
