Gateway Airport deals with $1.8 million shortfall

Associated Press - November 18, 2009 11:24 AM ET

MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is cutting expenses as it faces a $1.8 million budget shortfall.

Airport spokesman Brian Sexton said the areas facing cuts are advertising, contracts with outside consulting firms and special events.

An open house scheduled in February may go in order to save money.

In looking for revenue generators, airport officials say Gateway has more than 333,000 square feet of leasable airport space, and at present about 200,000 square feet is occupied.

Airport Deputy Director Casey Denny said with more than 130,000 square feet of space left available, the airport is currently attempting to increase that occupancy rate.

Airport officials say they're cutting expenses rather than staff.
