Yuma, AZ- November 18- The future of Yuma is being discussed. Some want it to grow, others say it's fine just the way it is.
The owners of 70 local properties and 2 companies are requesting to develop nearly 4,000 acres south of MCAS in Yuma. Those in favor say the 100 million dollar project is Yuma's future; those opposed say it's not in the community's best interests at this time.
Some people believe the area south of MCAS is perfect for agriculture and private use. Others envision over 20,000 housing units, a resort, commercial business park, and more.
"The city staff is supportive of the proposal, and we believe it meets all of the tenets that are required on land use planning," said City Administrator Mark Watson.
Watson says the land could boost the local economy by being a popular destination for America's retiring baby boomers.
"They might sell that to a larger entity that could capitalize on this, and develop the future market for the baby boomer retirees who are on their way to Yuma Arizona," said Watson.
Charles Saltzer has worked with several MCAS Commanding Officers, and disagrees with the current Commander's decision to support this proposed expansion.
"I worked 15 years as the Director of Engineering; we did planning work, and we always tried to protect this area along with the prior Commanding Officers," said Saltzer.
Saltzer also argues that since the area in discussion is city land, it will strain taxpayer money.
"The city will have to support this area with roads, fire protection, police protection, and the city is already over taxed in providing basic services; why in the world would they want to do this?" said Saltzer.
A public hearing was held Wednesday night at Yuma City Hall.
