SAN DIEGO (AP) - Nick Novak kicked four field goals and the San Diego Chargers beat the Arizona Cardinals 12-9 last night, 11 days before the teams meet again in the season opener. Both teams rested their starters, leaving backups to compete for roster spots. Arizona's Chandler Catanzaro kicked field goals of 42, 38 and 35 yards.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - D.J. Foster ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns, Jaelen Strong had 10 catches for 146 yards, and No. 19 Arizona State opened its season with a 45-14 rout over Weber State last night. Taylor Kelly threw for 238 yards on 18-of-27 passing, helping the Sun Devils build a 31-0 lead before sitting out the second half.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Anu Solomon will debut as Arizona's quarterback in the Wildcats' opener against UNLV tonight. How long he stays there will likely depend on how well he plays. Solomon, a redshirt freshman, won a close battle with Jesse Scroggins, Jarrad Randall and Connor Brewer, all transfers from top Division I programs.

PHOENIX (AP) - The Minnesota Lynx will face the Phoenix Mercury in what could be considered a dream matchup in the WNBA's Western Conference finals. The series, which starts today in Phoenix, will feature the WNBA's top two teams, with the league MVP, defensive player of the year and coach of the year all on the floor at the same time.
