Yuma Planned Parenthood passed out free condoms in an effort to attract more patients. The clinic has had a tough time meeting patient goals, and workers think lack of advertising and rumors about their services are to blame.
"We're going to try to go to local establishments that are aware and support planned parenthood and hopefully their customers will talk to other people," says spokesperson Heather George. She hopes more exposure will translate to more patients and more revenue. The clinic sees about 2,000 patients every year, but that's only half of their patient goal. If they manage to make more money, workers will finally buy a sign for their building which is located right off 16th Street.
Employees are also eager to set the record straight. They believe a September protest convinced Yuma residents that the office provides abortion procedures. It does not. Workers say the clinic provides only preventative services, and they'll always work with low-income patients.
Planned Parenthood is a non-profit organization that runs on federal funding and money provided by private donors.
