Imperial Valley, CA April 18 - Imperial Valley College cancels summer school to balance the school's budget. IVC President Ed Gould sent out a letter to 16,000 students alerting them about the cancellation last Friday.
IVC officials say they are among many colleges and higher education schools being severely impacted by California's budget crisis. Not only are school officials eliminating summer school, but they plan to eliminate 12 classified employee positions.
IVC says they are looking at a 9.1 percent reduction in the schools budget for next year creating a 3.5 million dollar gap that they need to close in order to keep the college stable. Bill Gay with Imperial Valley College says, "Over the course of next year, if this budget is what it is, and we hope it won't be, 25% of our students could not find classes next year."
Additionally, despite college canceling all main courses this summer a select group of specific training courses will remain.
