Back Surgery Preserving Male Fertility

Background:

Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure used to correct problems with the small bones of the spine. Spinal fusion eliminates motion between vertebrae. It also prevents the stretching of nerves and surrounding ligaments and muscles. It is an option when motion is the source of pain. Fusion will take away some spinal flexibility, but most spinal fusions involve only small segments of the spine and do not limit motion very much. (SOURCE: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/)

Spinal Fusion – Hard Truths :

Spinal fusion is often necessary to stabilize the spine after a traumatic injury, infection, or tumor. There is no solid body of research supporting the effectiveness of spinal fusion for various other spinal conditions. One study showed no clear difference between spinal fusion surgery and intensive rehabilitation for treating chronic low back pain. In addition, the surgery is expensive and has significant risks. Therefore, although this type of surgery is common, it is controversial, and there is no guarantee of treatment success. (SOURCE: http://webmd.com)

New Technology To Fuse Back Pain:

The two most common problems people have with the cervical spine are disk herniation and stenosis, a narrowing of the spine causing pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Urologists are now using robotic-assisted surgery to perform minimally invasive spinal surgery to alleviate patient's pain. Spinal surgery using traditional methods are still used, but transoral robotic surgery provides better access to the source of patient's problems. Complications:

There are always risks when it comes to surgery and spinal fusion is no different. For men in particular, a common and devastating side-effect of spinal fusion surgery is retrograde ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation occurs when semen enters the bladder instead of emerging through the penis during orgasm. Although men can still reach sexual climax, they ejaculate very little or have no semen. While not painful, retrograde ejaculation can cause male infertility. For retrograde ejaculation as a result of surgery, treatment with ayurvedic medications may restore normal ejaculation and fertility. It's important to discuss all options with your primary care physician. (SOURCE: http://www.merckmanuals.com)
