Yuma, AZ-While under an excessive heat warning, Yuma public safety officials are offering tips on preventing heat illnesses.

The National Weather Service for Arizona issued an excessive heat warning for Arizona cities, including Yuma County.

The Desert Southwest is like an inferno right now as it sizzles in triple digit temps.

So hot, that on days like this it seems the mercury in a thermometer could reach the point of explosion at 115 degrees.

Mike Erfert, spokesman for the Yuma Fire Department said this extreme heat could sneak up on you causing heat related illnesses.

"Stay ahead of it and staying ahead of it..a big one...is staying hydrated," Erfert said.

When the body is unable to cool itself through sweating, serious health illness may occur.

Some symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, dizziness, upset stomach, vomiting or even passing out.

"Be observant of the conditions you're feeling with your body and all be aware of the people around you," Erfert said. "They might be suffering some symptoms they themselves might not be aware of."

Sometimes heat exhaustion may progress to heat stroke.

Symptoms include the inability to sweat, confusion, dry-pale skin, unconsciousness or seizures.

"Anything like that is a 911 emergency call," he said. "Whenever they see someone in those conditions make a 911 call."

Erfert said if you have to do outside activities, you should perform your work during the coolest part of the day and take frequent short breaks in cool shaded areas.
