SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The U.S. Attorney's Office in San Diego says Mexican drug cartel kingpin, Benjamin Arellano Felix, has pleaded guilty to racketeering and conspiracy to launder money.
Arellano Felix appeared in a San Diego Federal Court this afternoon.
The plea avoids the spectacle of a trial for one of the world's most powerful drug lords of the 1990's.
The plea agreement calls for a maximum of 25 years in prison.
Arellano Felix is known for heading a once-mighty drug cartel that came to power in Tijuana, Mexico in the late 1980's.
He was extradited from Mexico in April 2011 to face drug, money-laundering and racketeering charges.
