Border Patrol agents find human remains in Imperial Valley

IMPERIAL, Calif. -The Imperial County Sheriff's Office says they have found human remains from two different bodies this week.

Sergeant Tom Garcia with the Imperial County Sheriff's Office says that on Monday around 9am, border patrol agents were tracking a group of illegal immigrants near the Highway 111 Checkpoint and found a human skull.

As agents kept searching, they found more bones.

Although the skeleton was missing some parts, they turned the remains over to an anthropologist to try and identify it.

On Sunday, a group of people camping at the West Desert in Imperial Valley found skeletal remains. The same group found more bones the following day.

They collected them and turned them over to the San Diego Police Department.

But remains were returned to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office because they were found in their patrolling area.

Sergeant Garcia says it's a misdemeanor crime to remove human remains and asks the public to contact police rather than removing them.
