San Luis city council candidate lawyer confirms court appeal submitted

Posted: Updated:

San Luis, AZ -- A local woman who was barred by a judge from running for city council because she allegedly does not speak English well enough is vowing to appeal the decision.

KSWT News 13 has confirmed that Alejandra Cabrera has submitted an Appeal to the Arizona Supreme Court, Friday.

Cabrera is Appealing a Court ruling by Superior Court Judge John Nelson from Wednesday that says she lacks enough English skills to serve on the San Luis City Council.

Judge Nelson made his ruling after hearing testimony from Cabrera herself -- and a linguistics expert, Dr. William Eggington.  Others also testified regarding her English skills.

However, Cabrera's attorneys disagreed with the ruling, saying the doctors test was not credible.

In an interview this weekend, Cabrera is reported saying the ruling denies her constitutional rights and the rights of the community to elect their leaders.
