San Luis, AZ.- A suspected smuggler is behind bars after he attempted to flee from police officers.

51 year old Mario Silva was pulled over by a San Luis Police officer for a traffic violation Tuesday afternoon.

Police say the San Luis resident took off towards the border as the officer approached his car.

They say the officer returned to his patrol vehicle and followed Silva who lost control of his vehicle and went into a canal.

Silva ran towards the border fence and the officer deployed his patrol dog "Rambo" in an attempt to arrest him. The officer with the assistance of his K-9 partner was able to arrest Silva as he attempted to jump over the fence into Mexico.

Police also seized 313 pounds of marijuana valued at more than $556,000.

Silva faces charges of possession of marijuana and transportation of marijuana for sale.
