YUMA, AZ - Attorney Jerrold Shelley was murdered after a man went on a shooting rampage last year in Yuma.
Now, some one his colleagues are helping an organization in need in his memory.
"It was my suggestion to make the donation to CLS because the budget has been cut from Washington DC and it was someone else at the meeting, I'm trying to remember who it was, that suggested that we do it in memory of jerry," said Conrad Mallek.
The Yuma County Bar Association has donated $2,000 to the Community Legal Services, an organization that helps people who cannot afford legal services.
Because of the weak U.S. economy the organization has been experiencing budget cuts.
"So these types of organizations are taking the main hit," said Mallek
Mallek has been involved with the bar association for several years and has served as the president.
He says he's happy to see the association helping the community in honor of his friend and colleague.
"I knew Jerry… he was one of the primary defense attorneys in Yuma. I was a prosecutor at the time," said Mallek.
Mallek says he remembers going head to head with Shelley in a kidnapping case but they both knew they were just doing their job.
"He was tough all the way down the line. But Jerry was sharp. He never took it personally and when the case was over, we were friends again," he said
The Jerrold Shelley Law Firm offices, off the corner of Giss Parkway and 2nd Avenue, was the scene of the crime were Shelley died.
He was representing the gunman's wife in a divorce battle.
Carey Hal Dyess went on a shooting rampage and shot and killed five people in Yuma last June before turning the gun on himself.
Now Shelley's colleagues honor his work and memory with a generous donation.
