Calexico, CA- With high school prom and graduation approaching, parents may be feeling overwhelmed with expenses. All these formal dresses are being given away to students living in Imperial County for free.
"I love the Shape, the way it looks, it's just beautiful," says Esmeralda a Calexico High School Student.
There are hundreds of dresses, some brand new with the tags still in place and some lightly used.
A group of volunteers from Calexico High School have been hard at work collecting for the first official prom dress drive.
"I've had this idea for 8 or 9 years, I'm happy to see it's finally coming together. Everyone who has helped out has gone way above and beyond," says Hortencia Armendariz who works for the family resources and student services department in the district.
She says in these tough economic times families could use a little help getting their teens ready for upcoming special occasions like prom and graduation.
"It's not only about Calexico, it's the whole Imperial County that's struggling financially. So you know what, if we can help out these families by them not having to spend 50- 100$ or more by giving the girls free dresses or to get the boys a free tux or suit, then their families can use the funds somewhere else," says Armendariz.
Calexico Price Center donated space for the prom dress drive to work out of. Nearly 100 students dropped by today find that special outfit.
"I think it's a great idea because there are a lot of parents that can't afford anything for their kids anymore, especially for prom," says Elizabeth a Calexico High School Student.
Girls are allowed to pick out three dresses to try on but are only allowed to take one home. Students will also have the chance to pick out accessories and shoes.
Armendariz encourage all students from imperial to at least drop by and check out what they have before over spending for that special day.
There is also some dress clothes for men.
The prom dress drive will be going on Tuesday- Sunday. From 9am to 6pm.
The group is also accepting more donations and in need of new or lightly used formal attire boys, Including things like ties, shoes etc.
