Exclusive: Mayor Escamilla resigns, will run for House of Representatives

SAN LUIS, AZ- San Luis Mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla is stepping down from office.

Mayor Escamilla spoke exclusively to News 13 Tuesday afternoon after his decision.

He says he will now be exploring an option to run for House of Representatives for District 4.

According to the new district maps, District 4 covers San Luis, Somerton, parts of Yuma, Gila Bend and it extends to the west side of Tucson.

Mayor Escamilla says he feels having the experience as mayor in a border city for more than six years, he can bring a lot to the table as a representative.

He says it wasn't an easy decision but felt the time was right for him, "well it was tough going into City Hall this [Tuesday] morning, it's something I've been thinking about for quite sometime." Mayor Escamilla went on to say, "I love what I do, I love my community, I think I could serve even more people if I do get elected to serve on the House of Representatives."

Mayor Escamilla will make the formal announcement at Wednesday nights council meeting.

His resignation is affective immediately.

Mayor Escamilla says he will submit paper work to run this weekend in Phoenix.

He will start campaigning next week for the primary election in August.
