YUMA, AZ- The parents accused of whipping their 15 year old daughter with an extension cord were back in Yuma Justice Court Friday.
42 year old Maria Fortner was charged with three felonies which include assault upon a minor using a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument, child abuse and aggravated assault per domestic violence.
Judge Gregory Stewart appointed an attorney to represent Fortner at her request.
Meanwhile, 41 year old Laron Hinton was also charged with similar if not the exact felonies Fortner was. He was being represented by defense attorney Michael Donovan, who was hired by Hinton's family.
Both were ordered to have no contact with her daughter or any other children.
State prosecutors say the couple's daughter suffered numerous welts, contusions and lacerations across her body from an incident at their home in the Foothills earlier this week. They say the daughter went to a neighbors house for help afterwards.
Their bonds remain at $150,000, despite Hinton's attorney requesting his bond to be lowered.
Both are back in court May 4 at 4 p.m.
