Yuma, AZ - This 2,400ft historic building with a spacious outdoor area will be the new headquarters for the Generation Y 2000 Diversity Center, a non-profit geared towards helping Yuma youth.
"We want to focus on core curriculum tutoring, what a student may be lacking or falling behind on at school. Over the summer months they will have the chance to catch up on reading, science, math those core curriculum studies that they may need to improve on," says Brandon Bennett the President and CEO of Back to the Basics.
Back to the Basics and the Regional Center for Border Health have been hard at work creating this program for nearly 2 years.
They moved into the building in March and are working away preparing for the ribbon cutting ceremony which will take place on Saturday May 5th.
"It's a great location because we want to integrate all the different groups in Yuma. Latin, LGBT, the Native American community and this is a great spot to do this, all housed in a historic building which used to be the railroad exchange," says Bennett.
GY2KC is geared towards students ages 11-18. The program is for everyone according to Bennett.
He says this is a safe place for students to come to during the summer or after school, to focus on their areas of interest or areas where they may need help.
"Things that we see in society today is a push for institutionalized learning, I think that's great for all the kids if they're geared towards that. But Not everyone can be a nuclear scientist. So we want to make sure the kids have options available to them," says Bennett.
It's not all work, according to Bennett. GY2CK will have an entertainment room, movie nights, state of the art computers, a backyard garden and a library stocked with books.
