YUMA, AZ - The National Weather Service Radar that serves Yuma and the Imperial Valley is getting the latest in Radar technology.
The upgrade to the existing Doppler radar is called Dual polarization. It is the most significant upgrade the radar has seen since its installation in 1996. Dual polarization technology adds new information about the size and shape of a radar target, such as a raindrop or a hailstone.
This information will help forecasters identify storms with severe weather potential, estimate how much rain is falling, and determine the type of precipitation falling from a storm. This in turn will help provide earlier and faster warnings for potentially dangerous storms.
KSWT Meteorologist Garry Frank was at the Doppler location Monday reviewing the work being done. You may notice the Radar image is not available while the upgrades take place this week. No severe weather is forecast.
