YUMA, AZ - Going green isn't easy when you don't have curbside. However the City of Yuma is working to change that in the near future with a proposed business partnership.
Dave Nash, the Public Affairs Coordinator for the City of Yuma says, "what we're hoping to do by sending out a request for a proposal is to find a partner, a vendor that might be willing to say hey here's some revenue we might be able to take that material for you sort it out, distribute it to certain people who can reuse it the right way and get you a little revenue cut on that."
Nash says they are often approached by city residents asking about recycling and making it more convenient with curb side service. Currently the city offers recycling on a voluntary basis, meaning residents can choose to drop off their recyclables, but it's on them to make the extra effort.
Two locations are available in Yuma County for such drop offs. However for residents like Michelle Gurion the trip from the foothills isn't easy especially when it's multiple times a week. So, the thought of curbside has her looking forward to the future. She says "that would be fantastic. I know a lot more people would do it if they didn't have to drop it off."
So, why doesn't the City of Yuma offer curbside service? Nash says, "Right now the biggest issue has been cost. If residents don't want to pay extra for that service than we're not going to offer that service because we can't provide something we can't pay for."
The issue will be up for discussion at the city's work session Tuesday night at City Hall Council Chambers.
