Telemedicine connects specialists to Imperial Valley patients

Calexico--If you have problems with transportation and need to see a medical specialist but one isn't around for hundreds of miles away, one Imperial Valley clinic can teleconnect you.

"This is a great opportunity for the valley to receive the services without necessarily going to San Diego," Hector Perez, nurse supervisor of Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo said.

The clinic in Calexico offers a new program called telemedicine.

Specialists from the University of California in San Diego are currently offering Endocrinology services.

Perez said some patients are still warming up to the idea of going to see a doctor through TV.

He said so far he's received positive comments.

Doctors are able to zoom in on the patient, show them their x-rays or walk them through information about their condition.

For some parts of the visit, healthcare professionals are on site to help out but the specialist does the rest such as reviewing the inside of your ear or heartbeat.

"Right now the expectation is to receive appointments for these services once a month," Perez said. "We'll schedule four patients, one patient, one hour per session and follow up is 30 minutes per patients."

The services are offered the first Friday of every month from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Clinic officials said they hope to expand the hours and services in the future.
