Posted: Updated:

San Luis, AZ--Economic development, expansion of a local port of entry and more community involvement is on the agenda for the new mayor of San Luis.

Following the sudden resignation of Mayor Juan Carlos Escamilla, Gerardo Sanchez was named the new Mayor of San Luis during a special meeting last week

Sanchez was sworn in as the new mayor Wednesday night.

The former councilman was getting ready to wrap up his career in politics after he didn't seek re-election during this upcoming elections.

He said he plans to continue what Escamilla envisioned for San Luis which involved economic development.

Sanchez said he will focus on building a stronger bridge between employers and the community.

"One of the things we need to expand is our borders," Sanchez said. "We need to facilitate and expand our current port of entry because it will benefit not only San Luis but Yuma County as a whole and the state as a whole."

Sanchez will serve as mayor for two years to finish Escamilla's term.

Escamilla announced his resignation from office on our newscast last week and said he will be running for a seat at the state's House of Representatives.
