High Ozone Advisory for the Yuma Area

Posted:

YUMA,AZ - The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is issuing a High Pollution Advisory (HPA) for ozone for the Yuma area.

The HPA is being issued because of an increase in natural emissions of volatile organic compounds in the Yuma area and meteorological conditions are moving ozone from Southern California into southwestern Arizona.

"When coupled with the elevated temperatures and bright sunshine that we expect to see over the next few days, it's a recipe for ozone formation," said ADEQ Air Quality Division Director Eric Massey.

ADEQ recommends that children and adults with respiratory problems avoid outdoor activities on Friday and suggests the general public limit outdoor activity throughout the day.

Ground level ozone is formed by a chemical reaction that needs heat from sunlight, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds to form. The months of April through September are the peak time in which higher levels of ozone are generated.
