YUMA, AZ - A local non-profit receives a big check from Walmart which will help fight hunger in Yuma County.
Today a Walmart's spokesperson announced the grant beneficiary during a news conference at the Yuma Community Food Bank.
The Food Bank was handed a $50,000 check.
Yuma County secured placement in the top 21, out of 200, communities in Walmart's "Fighting Hunger Together" Facebook campaign last month.
The Walmart foundation has made a $2 billion pledge through 2015 to help feed families across the country.
The food bank says it will share $20,000 with other local non- profits.
"We were surprised, we were excited, we were gratified," said Mike Ivers, Yuma County Food Bank President. "Feeding America, which is our national organization, partnered with Walmart, so we're happy something like that would happen but there was no guarantee and so … it's exciting for all the people of Yuma," he said.
Mike Ivers with the Yuma Community Food Bank says the money will be used to purchase two used refrigerated trailers and a used cooling rack system for the refrigerators.
He says despite the money received, the food bank still needs more help getting families fed in Yuma.
More than 23,000 people a month get their meals there.
