Yuma, Az- Elementary students were very excited to get their hands on the furry critters that paid them a visit.
The humane Society of Yuma has been visiting local schools to promote their Be-humane program with children.
Last week they entered every class room from kindergarten to 6th grade at HSL elementary school and educated kids on several topics. Students learned about animal care, bite prevention and animal cruelty.
HLS students also raised more than $2,000 for the humane society. The Humane Society says Animal Cruelty is a huge issue here in the desert southwest and that it is very important to educate children about the problem.
"There are many studies that show people who abuse people will also abuse animals and vice versa. So if we can stop a person from abusing an animal early on then maybe we can stop them from abusing a person later in life," says Annette Lagunas with the Humane Society of Yuma.
A couple Yuma Council members also came to show their support for the Be-Humane program. Councilmember Edward Thomas who recently adopted a dog says children can benefit by caring for a pet.
"One they would learn responsibility, time management and how to learn how to put others before themselves," says Edward Thomas, with the Yuma City Council.
The Humane Society has introduced their Be-Humane program to three schools in Yuma and they plan to introduce it to many more when schools start up again in August.
