SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities say a fast-moving wildfire is bearing down on the community of Shelter Valley east of Julian, forcing the evacuation of 100 homes.
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Battalion Chief Nick Schuler says the blaze has burned 1,000 acres since it was reported at about 2:15 p.m. Thursday near Banner Grade.
He says more than 200 firefighters are at the scene, along with 20 engines, six air tankers and four helicopters.
He says winds are not currently a factor but they are expected to increase Thursday night.
Shelter Valley is in an unincorporated area of San Diego County, 12 miles east of Julian within the boundaries of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
