Yuma Police Receive K-9 Vests from Elementary Students

Posted:

These elementary students are extra proud after presenting the Yuma police Departments K-9 unit with two dog ballistic vests after raising money to purchase them.

Elementary student Anthony Aguirre says they took some time to tell other students to get involved in the fundraiser.  "We all helped out by passing out packets to the whole school to sell and talked about how much we needed to raise."

Students raised more than two thousand dollars. Police say their gift will help keep their dogs safe.

The idea to raise money for these vests came after the school principal spoke to one of the K-9 handlers and saw a need for more vests, and later challenged students to raise money to buy the vests by selling chocolate. The Yuma Police Department says they are honored to receive such a great gift.

"This is very important to us these kids could have chosen another organization to raise money for and to have them chose to help the Yuma Police Department is great and it will help us  further in our program. Students in the audience got a preview of some ways handlers train their dogs. K-9 handler Stephanie Malone says these vests are helpful and much needed for their dogs.. "I think it is incredible, and the amount of money they raised it benefits the two dogs and we can't ask for anything more."Not only do these vests help protect their dogs but students are left knowing they did something special to help Yuma Police.
