YUMA, AZ - Teens in the Desert Southwest are getting a taste of what it is like to be in law enforcement.

Day one of the Yuma County Law Enforcement Academy's Explorer Program kicked off Sunday.

Participants ranging from 14 to 18 years old met at the Yuma County Sheriff's Office to load up on busses and be taken for a week long training at the Yuma Proving Ground.

Agencies throughout the community participate and give teens hands on training for a career in law enforcement.

Major Leon Wilmot with the Yuma County Sheriff's Office says they hope to make future law enforcement officers out of the program and many agencies officers were members of the Explorer program before starting their career."

A graduation will be held at the end of the week and upon completion graduates of the program will be able to assist officers with field traffic control, residential checks and security detail.
