IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA.- We now know the cause of death of a well known local couple who died after their house caught on fire.

The Imperial County Coroners Office says John and Pauline McConnell died of smoke inhalation and thermal burns.

On Monday morning, the couples home on McConnell Road between Holtville and El Centro was consumed by a fire.

According to the Imperial County Fire Chief there was little left of the rural home and the couple was found inside.

John McConnell was 89 and his wife Paulene 87.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
