IID Director Facing Child Abuse Charge Resigns and no longer behind bars

Heber, CA--An Imperial Irrigation District director arrested on child abuse charges has resigned from his elected position.

34-year old Anthony Sanchez, IID director an organization which oversees water and electricity supply and distribution in Imperial and Coachella valleys, has quit his post and is no longer behind bars.

The video started a controversy online and made national news.

The video shows the California elected official, whipping his stepson with a belt after he dropped the baseball during a game of backyard catch.

A neighbor turned in the video to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office last week.

ICSO said Sanchez voluntarily turned himself in Friday afternoon where he was booked for one felony charge of child abuse.

But on that same day, Sanchez posted his $100,000 bail and was released, according to Imperial County District Attorney's Office.

The district attorney's office said they haven't seen any charges filed on Sanchez.

ICSO said they plan to file the case with the district attorney tomorrow.

"Every parent in the state of California has the right by law to discipline their child," Lieutenant Scott Sheppeard of ICSO said during a Friday news conference,"When you cross the line between what's legal and not legal is the infliction of injury....it could be physical or mental."

Ryan Childers, Sanchez's attorney said authorities confirmed that the 10-year old boy did not have any injuries.

He said Sanchez's stepson is currently out of the state.
