Arizona Office of Tourism Snubs Yuma for Summer Travel

Posted:

The Arizona Office of Tourism is launching its new 2012 summer ad campaign.   SummerinAZ.com allows state travelers share their vacation fun on the web.

But there's something missing from the travel destinations the site suggests to summer travelers. Yuma.

The web site lists five categories of summer fun: Arizona Explorer, Family Vacationer, Outdoor Activities, Urbanite and Water Enthusiast. Although Yuma offers all of these types of attractions to its visitors, the city is getting no love from the Arizona Office of Tourism.

Linda Jordan is the executive director of the Yuma Visitors Bureau. She says the destination locations are based on research, and the state does recommend Yuma in the cooler months.

Ms. Jordan also says tourism is the third biggest money maker for the Yuma economy. Agriculture is first, followed by the military.

Collie Bergande works at the Yuma Visitors Information Center. She says many people visiting Yuma come from overseas, including countries like Japan, Germany and Australia. She credits the internet and "excellent advertising" for putting Yuma on summer tourists' radar.
