YUMA, AZ - Heavy smoke could be seen early today near Avenue A and County 12th Street, after a brush fire burned through heavy brush Tuesday afternoon. The Rural Metro Fire Department says the fire started around 4:30 P.M. on Tuesday. They say water tanks were sent out before equipment could be sent to the area of the fire.
Fire Officials say it was between 200 and 600 feet and not as large as fires go, but it is dense and lots of smoke covered a larger part of the area near the smoldering pile. The fire department says the main strategy is to keep it contained and not allow it to increase in size.
"Our main goal was to contain the fire and we sent a crew out last night to watch over it so they could turn some up the soil." Says, Charlie McMurray with The Rural Metro Fire Department.
Fire officials say this is the season when many brush fires get started and say fires like this one can end up spreading lots of smoke. Something we should try to avoid if going outdoors. "We advise people especially those with breathing issues to stay indoors and away from the smoke." Says, Charlie McMurray.
Crews continue to turn soil in the area to bring up any hot spots that may remain, so they can get that slow burning fire out.
