Former IID District Director Anthony Sanchez charged with child abuse

Posted:

IMPERIAL COUNTY - Anthony Sanchez, the former Imperial Irrigation Director has been formally charged after a video allegedly showing him whipping his stepson went viral.

The Imperial County District Attorney's Office has filed a formal complaint against Sanchez today.

Sanchez faces two felony counts for corporal injury to a child and child abuse.

The charges come after a neighbor of Sanchez videotaped him whipping his stepson with a belt during a game of backyard catch.

The 34-year-old voluntarily turned himself into Imperial County Sheriff's Office following the June 6 incident.

He was arrested and booked but later released on $100,000 bond.

Sanchez also quit his post with IID soon after his arrest.

Earlier this week IID members decided not appoint anyone to Sanchez's seat.

Sanchez will be arraigned on July 10, 2012.
