YUMA, AZ- Taylor is just one of many children who take part in a special horse riding session at "Saddles of Joy", each weekend the facility holds several private sessions for children who need a little healing.
Saddles of Joy, is a non-profit organization located in Yuma, its goal is to provide therapeutic healing for children with special needs.
Saddles of Joy began in 2000, after Barbara Tomlinson's son, struggled with depression and bipolar disorder. The organization's director first started with three horses, and with the support of her husband and father, the program began to grow and was recognized by other agencies, she then began to help more children.
"We are so very proud to this is our twelve year with united way we were picked up again, and there are many agencies that are out there helping the community, and we are proud to be one of them." Says, President and founder, Barbara Tomlinson.
Each year the facility relies on volunteers to help with the maintenance and assist with the children who take part in a lesson.
Tom Cortis is the head volunteer at "Saddles of Joy," and says he sees a lot of value and benefit from the program.
"Its therapy for adults, for kids and for just about anybody. I used to suffer from depression now I come out here and give everything that I have to the horses."
Parents like Taylor's say they are pleased to see their daughter do something that she finds great joy in and is glad to have found the program.
"Taylor really likes coming here she loves to play afterwards she will also head out to the petting zoo and its just all around great program for all that they do around here." Says, Stephanie Auger.
Horse riding is not the only thing offered at the facility. A petting zoo is also available for families and kids before and after each session.
The "Saddles of Joy" founder hopes more people take the time to do something nice for children here, or anywhere else a child may need it.
