Yuma, AZ - The Yuma Police Department just got news they will receive a million dollars in federal grants. They say this money will go far, especially in these tough economic times.
The large grant will provide partial funding for 8 additional police officers over a 3 year period. The grant is coming from the department of justice community oriented policing services.
YPD says adding additional officers to their force is very costly. Aside from the amount spent on salaries and benefits, equipment and training can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
"It's really a positive boost for the Police Department to get those 8 positions even partially funded. Basically it funds a portion of those 8 officers salaries, a million dollars goes a long way," says Sergeant Clint Norred with the Yuma Police Department.
The hiring program requires the department to budget for costs over the million dollar mark and retain those funded positions after the grant expires.
YPD says they will continue to be active in seeking grant funding so they can continue to improve the services they provide to the community.
