YUMA, AZ - Tongues and tails are wagging over the new Yuma County Animal Controls Division, set to launch on Sunday.
The new offices sit behind the Yuma County Public Health Department and will serve as headquarters for two full time and two part time officers.
"The reason that we started down this path several years ago was because animal control is not consistent with the mission of the Humane Society," explains County Administrator Robert Pickels explains the division's creation.
And the mission of the Animal Control Division is perfectly clear.
"We're prepared to do everything from animal bites to stray dogs to aggressive dogs, vicious dogs. We will be writing citations when needed. A big part of what we're going to do is education. We find the more education we get out there, the less problems we have with animals. We will also be partnering with law enforcement doing cruelty and neglect investigations," states Yuma County Animal Control Superintendent, Phil Beatty.
Chances are, you'll never have to go down to the new animal control division of the county. All animal detention is still being done at the Humane Society of Yuma. The Humane Society will also be the place you go for pet licensing and, of course, adoptions.
And speaking of adoptions, who gets to take the bill for this new County Animal Control Division home with them?
"We expect that we will be able to handle our integral program and continue the partnership with the humane society for the same amount of money," says County Administrator Pickels.
All parties agree the goal is to make sure the public … and our pets … are safe. It's a cooperative effort that's sure to keep tails wagging.
