Yuma Shelter wants owners to come pick up lost pets

Posted:

Yuma, AZ - According to national statistics more pets go missing around the 4th of July than any other time of the year. More than 30 dogs and some cats have already been dropped at HSOY

Not everyone can appreciate a spectacular fireworks show and the festivities associated with independence day.

"The noise and if they are outside the visual, just seeing the fireworks is very scary for them. So owners really need to take precautions and keep their pets ideally indoors," says Shawn Smith with HSOY.

Pets have different reactions to the events of July 4th, but according to the Humane Society of Yuma many pets hide or run off, some even wonder many miles away from home.

People have been calling and dropping by the shelter today to see if their lost pets have been turned in.

"Last night we went out for 4th of July, we left our dog in the back yard and when we got home he was gone. We were here at the shelter looking for her, but we didn't have any luck. We are hoping she will get turned in," Says Arlee Debernardeaux, a Yuma resident.

Some were lucky, while others will have to continue their search.

"She's a black lab, she's about 9 years old, she has a gray chin, she's a good dog, she usually comes up to people if they call her," says Debernardeaux.

More than 30 dogs and some cats have already been dropped off at the Humane Society in Yuma in the last 2 days, and they are expecting more.

If you lost your pet, you only have 3 to 5 business days to come in and claim your pet before it becomes property of the Humane Society.

Although the numbers may seem high HSOY says the number of pets getting lost around the 4th of July is actually going down in comparison to previous years.

"Last year on these two days we had over 70 dogs and cats brought in and we took a random sample from June last year on Wednesday & Thursday and we had 90 come in," says Smith.

Arlee Debernardeaux tells News 13 her dogs name is Michelle and the family really misses her. She is asking for anyone with information regarding her dog to please contact her at 928-246-0248

Also the Humane Society recommends for people with lost pets to come in and look rather then calling. They say too many pets have similar characteristics.
