Smuggling Tunnel Found in San Luis Strip Mall

Posted: Updated:

SAN LUIS, AZ – Story by Janet Avelar Reporter Gabriel Barragan is the property owner of a strip mall on Archibald Street in San Luis, and was shocked to find Federal Agents and police surrounding the property.

"I'm kind of surprised because we weren't expecting this, I mean we rented the place out a year in a half ago and we actually didn't know what was going on." Says, Gabriel.

Federal agents and Yuma County Sheriffs raided a strip mall in the area early Saturday morning when they went inside they discovered a smuggling tunnel that ran through the Mexican Border.

Officials with the Drug Enforcement Administration found a tunnel similar to this one just Northwest of the San Luis Port of Entry. Mexican soldiers also guarded the Mexican side of the tunnel.

The business owner says the original plan was to have a Parcel Delivery Service in the building but noticed that the tenant never opened during daylight hours.

"I guess they were working at night, doing things in there, but nobody noticed it. I talked to the other renters; they didn't know anything about it." Says, Gabriel Barragan. U.S. Border Patrol agents remained on site guarding the tunnel in the vacant building.  It is unknown how long the tunnel was being used or if anything was recovered.

Federal agents did not comment on the raid since the investigation is still on going. As of now there's no information on any arrests made, or if any drugs or items were seized.
