YUMA, AZ - Despite blazing hot temperatures Rural Metro was at Bobby's Harley Davidson Tuesday morning for their 9th annual "Christmas in July Coat Drive."
However, coats are not the only items the fire department is collecting.
Charly McMurdie from Rural Metro, says "We are looking for any type of clothes people may want to get rid of, even blankets. We're really not turning a whole lot away. If you want to clean out your closet or your linen closet we'll take whatever you have."
In an effort to help local families and those in need rural metro has held Christmas in July for the last nine years. Rural Metro says they hold the drive in July because it's the perfect time of year for people to clear out their closets and help those less fortunate from going without winter clothing.
In the past it used to benefit several local churches in town as well as crossroads mission. However, we haven't been approached by those organizations in quite a while, so most go to the Crossroads Mission now."
Rural Metro says donations will be accepted until July 24th at various locations throughout Yuma County. McMurdie says "Our rural metro fire stations in the foothills...both station 2 and 10 are collecting throughout the entire drive. Station one on Arizona Avenue is another collection site as well as station 5 on 8th street."
If you missed out on Tuesday's drop off another one is scheduled Saturday July 14th from 7 to 11 in the morning at Kneaders located at the Yuma Palms Shopping Center.
Those who attend will receive a free slice of French Toast with their donation.
