Yuma, AZ - Have you checked the locks on your doors, have you checked your windows, do you have sensor lights or keep your lights on outside during the night.
That's what the Yuma Police Department wants people to think about..
"Do you have a family plan in the case of a break-in. You want to look at those and see what you really can do in that type of situation," says Sergeant Clint Norred with the Yuma Police Department.
Revisiting some of the basic safety steps could help keep you and your family safe.
YPD says burglary and break-ins are real issues here in the desert southwest and they want people to be prepared because they say it could happen to anyone anytime.
The best things you can do is get deadbolt locks, security screens, good lighting , motion sensors on your lights, you would be surprised how well all these items work," says Sgt. Norred.
YPD says you can find these items at most hardware stores. Today News 13 drop into a Lowes home improvement store and they showed us all the different items people can purchase to help detour criminals.
YPD says if you find yourself at home during a break in- to not confront the home invader and call 9-1-1 immediately.
