YUMA, AZ - Most people turn in items such as Newspapers, plastic bottles and cans when visiting their local recycling center, so they don't end up in a land field.
But many of us don't know how to properly dispose of unwanted chemical or electronic materials used throughout the home.
The City of Yuma is looking to help residents properly dispose of them by holding a Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. KSWT is telling you about it now, so you can get ready.
"Waste drop off day is a free program, where people can drop off hazardous material that they don't want laying around in their home. Examples of that would be old pesticides, things of that nature also old paint." Says, Public Affairs Coordinator, Dave Nash with the City of Yuma.
Old batteries, motor oil, and even old electronics are just some of the items that will be collected at the event.
The program is open to all residents free of charge, the Hazardous Waste Collection program is the safest way to dispose of unwanted corrosive and toxic products that can be harmful if they are improperly disposed.
"Electronic items that may contain some heavy metals may come in contact with the ground and possibly the water supply and we don't want that to happen." Says Dave. One resident who says he plans to take advantage of the program
"There is a lot of stuff that is just thrown in the trash without recycling it. There is a lot of stuff have." Says,Yuma Resident Tony Peralta.
Regular recycling bins are also available year-round for residents to drop off metal items, cardboard material, cans and clear plastic as well. The only thing not accepted will be large household appliances, or commercial waste.
