YUMA, AZ - The City of Yuma reports they are still working through issues related to Fridays severe weather that hit our area.
Airport Loop is closed to all traffic in both directions between Avenue A and County 14th Street for repairs to be made to a sinkhole developing adjacent to the northbound side of the street. Detour using Avenue B. The City of Yuma and Yuma County are responding to the sinkhole and washout of the road shoulder.
Estimated time for repairs is unknown at this point; however, motorists should expect the closure to continue through at least this week. The Director of Field Operations, Joel Olea says the damage is related to Friday's unusually intense rain.
Rain has also caused damage in some City of Yuma parks facilities.
Sections of the neighborhood park in the Ocotillo subdivision are being closed until they are cleaned and repaired. The sidewalk surrounding the park, particularly on the east side, is closed for repairs. The basketball court and playground areas need to be cleaned of dirt and debris resulting from storm water runoff. However, the grass area used for soccer remains open.
Park users should expect the roped-off portions of the park to remain closed until the coming weekend.
Adjacent to that park, street lanes are narrow but otherwise no impediment to traffic at 42nd Place and Jojoba Avenue due to storm water runoff.
The boat launch at West Wetlands Park is closed due to high levels of water in the Colorado River.
Likewise, the beach areas and fishing area at Gateway Park are largely submerged and are unusable at this time. However, nearby ramadas or picnic shelters remain open.
Visitors to the area riverfront are advised to use utmost caution, as river levels are high and currents varying to degrees not commonly seen.
