YUMA, AZ - It's the sunniest city in the world and no secret most visitors flock to Yuma for the winter months, but according to recent statistics tourism in Yuma has increased in the last year.
Linda Jordan from the Yuma Visitors Bureau says "All indications for the Yuma area were up. The direct travel spending in Yuma County was up 6.2 Percent over 2010 to 2011."Jordan says those recent numbers were released at the Governors Conference on tourism this past week by the Arizona Office of Tourism and Dean Runyan Associates. She says there were 6,330 jobs in Yuma from travel and tourism and of those jobs $150.6 million was generated in Yuma County. Jordan says of those earnings. 39.6 million In taxes was collected in Yuma County, which is up 9.6% compared to 2010.
She also says although stats show we attract many visitors here on business, the number of leisurely travelers has also increased. Jordan says, "We have the Colorado River and it's amazing the people who go through here and don't realize it. Many come from California and neighboring states just to boat on the Colorado and experience all that Yuma has to offer."
Overall, as tourism continues to increase in Yuma County so does the positive impact it has on the economy.
