San Luis Police say domestic violence cases decreasing

Posted: Updated:

San Luis-San Luis Police Department said the domestic violence rate in San Luis is slowly decreasing.

Police said the number of domestic violence cases are slowly dropping because of public awareness of the issue and with the help of social media.

They said since 2009 the numbers have gradually gone down.

For 2010, a total of 132 cases were reported and the perpetrator were formally charged.

In 2011 the number went down by 11 and so far this year police said they've had 46 cases.

"Hopefully it stays that way and it doesn't go up again," Blanca Silva, SLPD spokeswoman said. "There's unemployment obviously like in the whole county. There's a lot of factors that make a difference in that but the important thing right now that our numbers are going down."

Recently, the City of San Luis held a meeting between local government agencies, community leaders and domestic violence awareness groups to help establish a shelter for victims.
