GY2KC in Yuma off to a great start & building a music venue

Yuma, AZ- Some students are beating the heat and keeping busy at a new youth center.

"It's a good place to escape the heat, not sit at home all day, not be bored , they can get away from the summer time blues. We haven't received any negative feedback. They love this place, that's why they keep coming," says Samuel Mcintosh.

The Generation Y 2000 Diversity Center is a non- profit which is a division of Back to the Basics Please.

Samuel Mcintosh with G-Y-2-K-C says it's a forward thinking center supporting youth from Yuma county. He says it's a safe space that promotes respect, dignity, diversity, creativity and personal development.

Mcintosh says they're off to a great start but are still looking to have more teens enroll in their program. He says they're so new that not many parents and students realize this is a resource available to them.

"We're here for the community, it's amazing when kids and parents walk in and say how they didn't even know this place existed. It's a great place and that's why what we are here, to serve our community," says Mcintosh.

They offer many programs including computer literacy, tutoring, academic counseling, recreation and music awareness. They are currently working on a project called the backyard.

"We are building an all age music venue by building a stage with professional sound and lighting in our back yard. We are calling it the "Backyard". We want to get touring bands to come play for us and offer local kids a show in a drug and alcohol free zone," says Mcintosh.

Mcintosh says they have already started cleaning the back yard area and they will begin building the stage next week. They are hoping to have the project completed by September.

GY2KC is located at 447 S. Main Street.

They accept ages 11-24
