EL CENTRO, CA- A man is in custody after stealing an El Centro resident's car at knifepoint.

It happened around 3 a.m. Sunday near the corner of 4th Street and Ross Avenue.

El Centro Police say Luis Manuel Hernandez pulled out a knife, put it up against a witness's neck and requested the car keys.

They say he jumped in a grey 2004 Honda Accord, drove down Aurora Drive and onto Interstate 8.

Hernandez was arrested by San Diego Sheriff's deputies after trying to cross a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Campo.

On Sunday evening, ECPD was notified by San Diego Sheriff's deputies that Hernandez was in their custody.
