YUMA, AZ - Construction at Yuma International airport is officially underway. It begins with digging up taxi way Zulu the primary runway used by commercial airlines, corporate aircraft and the general aviation community.
Gen Grosse from Yuma International Airport says "We are going to widen the taxi way from 35 feet to 50 ft and add lighting to the project as well."
The current widening project is part 1 of 3 phases and is split up to avoid problems with surrounding aviation. Simultaneously to the widening project is construction for the Amelia Earhart hangar at Million Air.
A $2.1 million grant from the FAA has made construction possible and what is great about these projects is its hiring local contractors for the next several months. Grosse says, "It's really good for the community because it's over $2 million dollars that's staying right here in our community. Obviously the project is a benefit to aviation users, it allows for a larger aircraft to utilize the facility. Plus the lighting aspect is important because right now we don't have lighting."
Grosse says all together the airport will have five improvement projects taking place now through December. She tells News 13, "Next month we will break ground on the Aviation Industrial Center which is the $5 million multi tenant hangar complex and in September we are going to do some terminal apron rehabilitation. Then we are going to add restrooms to the secured area of the terminal."
