SAN FRANCISCO – The four-year legal battle over same-sex marriage in California could soon reach an end.
Backers of Proposition 8 have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overrule a previous appeals decision which ruled the measure unconstitutional. If the Supreme Court doesn't take the case, same-sex marriages could resume in California.
In today's filing, lawyers for the group of religious conservatives sponsoring the voter-approved ban argue the ruling from the appeals court is "tantamount to a judicial death sentence for traditional marriage laws throughout the Circuit."
Lawyers representing parties against Prop 8 in 2009 say they will urge the Supreme Court to reject the case. The high court is expected to act on the matter this fall.
