YUMA, AZ - Local students fill up their baskets with pants, shoes, shirts and other necessary items to prepare them for the upcoming school year, all thanks to The Salvation Army and Target.
Captain Randy Hartt from The Salvation Army says, "We know how much in this community people are pouring it out. The hospitals doing something and everybody who can help it is appreciated due to the great need and poverty that we have in our community. It is so important that we do this and it has been so important to these kids and they've had a great time doing it."
Cpt. Hartt says local families signed up for the back to school shopping event and 25 K-12th grade students were selected and given a $80 Target gift card.
The collaboration between The Salvation Army and Target benefits not only local students but school kids throughout the country. This is the second time the duo has teamed up to help those less fortunate and hope to continue the partnership in the future. Cpt Heart says, "It also allows kids to pick stuff they want to wear. Things they really want for school so they can go back to school with a bang and look cool or whatever it is that they need."
The Salvation Army says although this is a one day event they always provide assistance to those in the community. Cpt. Hartt tells News 13, "The great thing is that with our voucher system for example we are able to voucher our clothing and all kinds of stuff right from there and we do that once every 6 months."
The Salvation Army & Fry's also have a partnership where donated school items will also benefit those in need and for more information contact the Salvations Army's Social Security Office.
